An Idea Emerges
2018
During his studies in Shanghai, Sebastian became acquainted with the special appreciation that is given to edible and medicinal mushrooms in Asia. Mushrooms also play a central role in physical and mental well-being in Asia. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends consuming 150 g of mushrooms daily for a long and healthy life.
The Modest Beginnings
A small research project revealed the potential of mushroom cultivation. Mushrooms can be grown in old buildings that are often no longer usable for other purposes. They grow independently of the seasons and on by-products from forestry or agriculture, which are thus upcycled.
At the same time, initial attempts to cultivate medicinal mushrooms were started.
The Company is Growing
2023 – 2024
Stoff’n is rapidly becoming one of the largest mushroom substrate producers in Austria. The fundamental cultivation methods for today’s functional mushroom production are being developed, and the most promising mushroom strains are being tested. Sebastian and Lisa begin to share their knowledge about mushroom cultivation through courses and on-site tours. In just two years, over 500 people have been initiated into the secrets of mushroom cultivation.
In 2024, Sebastian, along with Michaela Friedl (nutritionist and managing director of the mushroom cultivation business “GutBehütet”), will publish the book “Fascination of Mushroom Cultivation” with Stocker Verlag.
The next steps are becoming clear
How can medicinal mushrooms be brought into a highly effective and bioavailable form for the human body? And where can the corresponding knowledge be found?
It’s no easy task. Sebastian, together with experts, began to delve into traditional Chinese texts on medicinal mushrooms and current scientific literature to discover the most effective preparation and extraction methods for these fungi. After numerous more or less successful attempts on our own, we were fortunate to meet enthusiastic pharmacists and doctors who supported us on our journey with their proven knowledge. Together with them, we developed the liquid extracts from the mushroom fruiting bodies. Over the next years we invested into the machinery and knwledge necessary to produce large quantities at a high quality.
